We're back for the 7th entry in our on going podcast series "Game Over" where we discuss gaming, games and why two 30-something men still giggle like 15 year old boys.

This week we talk about;

*SOE Rumors: A changing of the guard?
*The Roleplaying: Radar's words, not mine.
*Adult MMO's: Do they have a profitable place in the market?
*Currently Play: What games we are currently playing, and how we rate them.

And be sure to stick around AFTER the final music of the podcast to hear the first ever "Out-takes". Radar recorded our "warm up" and well.. I promise. You'll laugh.

I was a big Pen and Paper RPG player (Go Go gully dwarf beserker!) I also played all the great pc/console RPGS. And I still managed to date....go figure.

As for roleplaying in MMO's...it always fealt....wrong. I did it on the old muds but just never could in MMO's. I tried back in EQ when it first came out but most peoples idea of roleplaying was "thee" or "thou" or any other number of flourishes that a troll wouldn't use.
EQ2 is an even worse enviroment if you ask me (and I am aware you didn't). With that game it is not the players so much as the game itself. Why are halflings asking my Dark Elf bruiser for help reclaiming thier home or asking me to save thier friends in fallengate? We are racial enemies. And I know people hate race class restrictions but come on.....a fae shadowknight or gaurdian? Yea I want Huggy McSparkleButt tanking for me.
As for WoW...well...watching people RP in WoW just makes me laugh. This coming from a guy who stopped a D&D game for an hour to figure out how much damage an elven wizard does when wielded as a club.

RP in an MMO died for me with SWG's NGE. No, put the big stick away, this isn't 'just another NGE rant' but a serious attempt to point out that somethings rotten in Denmark.

Here I am on Tansari Point, roleplaying an Imperial officer cadet. Why the heck am I even on this station? I'm an oficer in the Imperial fleet... well, I will be when I graduate.

And here's well known criminal and terrorist Han Solo getting me to run errands? Where are my stormtroopers? Take him to the detention centre.

OK< so I play errand boy and then spy on my fellow officers, dancing for them like a Mos Eisley hor. The shame. Eventually I make it planetside and, oh forf, I'm running errands for Jabba???

OK< let's say I'm trying to be a jedi. All good aligned and law abiding. Ten minutes into the game and I'm slaughtering prisoners that were being illegally transported by the Hutts...

None of it makes any real sense. It lacks 'coherence'. Or, as they say on the forums, its teh suck!

Roleplaying is something I do as a matter of course in a game; it does not even require conscious thought. I play Dwarf, Ratonga and Dark Elf with different styles, and always have.
It becomes more and more challenging in the MMOG environ though.
The advent of voice chat replacing type for game communication makes it very tough for a deep voiced man to play his tiny female Gnome convincingly. This could be countered via technology, such as Vivox (www.vivox.com) has developed - it really works, and would cause both of you to giggle uncontrollably, I promise.
The other thing hampering rp in MMOGs is the matter of time. In EQ1, there was plenty of time to rp while you meditated or (gods save us) camped a mob for four days running. This next generation of MMOs for us short-attention-span types (and don't get me wrong, I despise time sinks), allows very, very little time to invest in roleplay. Besides, how effective is it for a Troll to say, "ARGH, me see mor BITEY ting kom heer!" as opposed to the more utilitarian, "add". Yup, the squishy caster might be dead by the time he typed out the longer line.
Then there are the non-rp folk who hate what inveterate Dwarves like I do... "why u talk funny? i cant undertand u."
"Well, Oi don' quite unnerstand yer type eidder, me friend, so we're aboot even! Now then... whur's me beer?!"
